A workshop on the reality of the Sudanese –US relations and horizons of progress was held by the International Relations Center in collaboration
with the National Center for Media Production at Martyr Al -Zubair Mohamed Saleh Conference Center in Khartoum on 25th October, 2016 aiming to support the media campaign to inform the American public opinion and the world community with the real situations in Sudan and the recent political developments, setting of academic, scientific theoretical frame in treating and dealing with the USA.
The workshop stood on the historical background of the relations between Sudan and the United States and pointed to variations in these relations due to internal and external policies governing the whole world.
Several working papers were presented highlighting the developments in the bilateral relations. Ambassador Dr. Khidir Haroun Ahmed has presented a valuable lecture on the long history of the Sudanese –American relations.
The paper stated that the fulfillment of the Americans to their promises for normalizing the relations and the lifting of the economic sanctions could serve as incentive to both the government and its opponents to move forward and reconcile their differences and to make the outcome of the National Dialogue a genuine step for forming inclusive government that leads the country.
The impacts of US sanctions on people (the case of Sudan) was the title of the second paper which was presented by Dr. Osama Aydarous Ahmed. The paper has referred to the direct negative s on the people. The paper indicated that the negative impacts of the sanctions have included reduction of the individual's income, increasing the unemployment rates, the lack in hard currency resources in addition to the impacts on the economy and the industrial banking sectors, impeding the textile industry, the high cost of establishment and maintenance for industries in Sudan and the increase in numbers of the immigrants who are looking for better economic situations.
The third paper has discussed the situation of the Sudanese –American relations from an American point of view. The fourth paper was on US sanctions as policy and strategy.
Members of the American delegation that participated in Sudan - US relations conference have expressed their own points of view, describing their visit to Sudan as amazing and successful. Roger A. Buller, Senior Vice –President, Regional and Branch Manager of Benjamin E. Edwards and Company, said that most of people in the United State of America know nothing about Sudan, and that he was one of them, added that this mistaken picture on Sudan was drawn by the western media.
Buller said that they are committed to when they go home to conveying an honest opinion about what they have actually seen in Sudan.
Sierra Scott, a journalist who has visited Sudan three times since 2008, said that she had negative image about Sudan in the past, but she insisted to change this image and to know the real image of Sudan by herself.
Mohamed Awad-Eljied a Sudanese American expert and consultant has called for a better image of Sudan in the western media, indicating that he exerted great efforts to reflect a real image of Sudan. He added that their mission during their visit to Sudan is to know the impacts of the American sanctions on the Sudanese people, visit different schools, universities, and hospitals and meet with people as well as officials.
Awad-Eljied concluded by saying that the US sanctions have affected the whole life in Sudan, particularly health, pointing to the noticeable increase in the rates of women breast cancer and the high cost of diagnosis the disease abroad and the lack of equipments in Sudan because of the sanctions .
The workshop came out with several recommendations included; leading media campaign inside the USA to clarify facts about Sudan .The readiness of the American side to support such campaigns .The demands to lift the US sanctions among Americans. Importance to benefit from Sudanese experts to study the national issues .Looking for training opportunities in the fields of agriculture, animal resources , transport , health, education, and technology .Popular interaction and communication between people of the two countries through NGOs to change the negative image about Sudan .
Economic, political experts, academicians representing Governmental and private sectors and mass media have participated in the workshop.
