Aror Calls on African Countries to Use the Internet to Achieve the SDGs

Khartoum - Minister of Information, Communications and Information Technology, Bushara Juma Aror called on African countries to benefit from communication and Internet technologies for the benefit of humanity and the African citizen in particular to achieve the objectives of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
This came in the opening ceremony of the African Internet Governance Forum, organized by the ministry, in cooperation with the AU Infrastructure Commission, the African Telecommunications Union and the African Internet Association, where the minister expressed his hope that the forum will reach recommendations that promote African solidarity and enable the African peoples to benefit and make maximum use of telecommunications and Internet services to improve the human condition in the continent.
For his part, Director of the Digital Government Division of the United Nations, speaking at the opening of the forum through a recorded speech, expressed his thanks and appreciation to Sudan and the African Union for hosting the forum, pointing out that the communication technologies and the Internet are important in achieving communication and supporting social and economic development and promotion of African societies to achieve the goals of sustainable development, stressing the efforts of the UN to enable Africans women and men to access to the Internet, hoping that the forum to reach the outcomes and identify the priorities that enable the overcoming of obstacles.
The representative of the African Union's Infrastructure Commission said in her speech that the Internet has become one of the most important motivators of human life, stressing the importance of Africans' contribution to the global dialogue on the Internet, reviewing the scientific achievements of Africans in this regard, revealing the launch of the African Internet Initiative, calling for the importance of the forum to develop guidelines that enhance data protection and strengthen the Internet infrastructure through strengthening partnership and cooperation between the relevant institutions to contribute to the transformation towards the digital economy of the continent.
For his part, Director General of the Telecommunications and Post Regulatory Authority, Dr. Yahya Abdullah said that the objectives of the forum are to address the challenges of the issues of Internet governance and its applications and Internet services in African countries, pointing out that the forum discusses the Internet issues in all technological aspects, legislation and laws governing it and ways to bridge the digital divide between African countries and between urban and rural areas, adding that Sudan's experience is to be reflected and to stand on the similar problems among most African countries and the role of partners in civil society organizations as well as governments in Internet issues, expressing his hope that the forum will discuss various Internet issues in the continent and reach recommendations that support Internet governance in African countries.
