Editorial: Salva Kiir Mediation on Two Areas Talks

In the news, The Sudanese government said it has accepted the offer of South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit to facilitate negotiations with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/North (SPLM-N) to end the armed conflict in the Two Areas.
The Sudanese government also welcomed the mediation undertaken by President Kiir to reunite the two factions of the SPLM-N which is now split into two factions one led by Abdul Aziz Al-Hillu and the second by Malik Agar.
Presidential Assistant Dr. Faisal Hassan Ibrahim on Friday made a light visit Juba where he discussed with Kiir the outcome of the recent meeting between the government and the SPLM-N faction led by Abdel-Aziz al-Hillu in South Africa.
It goes without saying that peace and stability in the Two Areas are strategic objectives for the Sudanese government.
The government repeatedly announced its commitment to engage in simultaneous talks with the rebel group to discuss the political items besides the humanitarian issues and the security arrangements.
However, the surprise visit of the Presidential Aide to Juba after the failure of his consultative talks with Al-Hillu in Johannesburg under the auspices of the AUHIP is a real indicator that Salva Kiir’s mediation becomes an official demand from the Sudanese government as well as the AUHIP.
The former SPLA 9th and 10th divisions in South Kordofan and the Blue Nile formed the SPLM-N in the run-up to South Sudan’s secession and have been fighting the Sudanese army in the two areas since 2011.
This means that the two divisions are under the leadership of the SPLA, and accordingly the mediation of Salva Kiir would pay off as he will deal with the issue from the angle of his position as the Supreme Commander of the SPLA.
We believe that President Salva Kiir will succeed in his endeavours through his contacts with the SPLM-N leading figures in the Two Areas, besides his directives to the commanders of 9th and 10th divisions.
If President Salva Managed to bring the SPLM-N leaders round a unified agenda, then resolving the Two Areas issue will become a reality and a step forward in boosting the relations between Khartoum and Juba.
